Event Description

In partnership with the Peretz Centre, Gliklekh in Goles is proud to announce Brief Utopias in the Time of Monsters, a community Purim variety show, taking place at the Peretz Centre, Saturday, March 14th!  SAVE THE DATE!

The theme of this show is inspired by Italian Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci’s reflection on interregnum — “the moment of legal and political in-betweeness” between ruling powers “written from within a Fascist prison around the same time (Muehlebach)”: “The old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born. Now is the time of monsters.” Bring us your MUSIC, your POETRY, your DRAMA, your BURLESQUE, your DRAG that riffs on the brief utopias that emerge in moments of political in-betweenness, when alternate worlds begin to peek out and bat their eyelashes at us from beneath the rubble.

This event will also be a hamentaschen potluck! We invite you to bring your tastiest, most radical hamentaschen to the show! After all, collective liberation requires a gut nosh!

We are looking for performers of all kinds interested in presenting a 5-minute performance (kid performers too please!). We will provide a stage, microphones, and an audience, the rest is up to you! To be added to the list of performers, please email glikingoles@gmail.com by March 2nd with a short description of your act and your tech needs. We are also looking for volunteers to help with set-up, take-down, and the registration table (sign up in the registration form!).

About Gliklekh in Goles

Gliklekh in Goles (Yiddish for “delighted in diaspora”) is a collective of anti-Zionist Jews based on the traditional, stolen lands of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam peoples in so-called “Vancouver”. By drawing on the culture and khokhme (wisdom) of our ancestors, and making community art through an intersectional lens, we aim to make the diaspora irresistible.
