Event Description

The High Holidays are the time to seek and to give forgiveness between people. Do we have to forgive everyone? Do people have to ask for it? When do we need to seek it?  Classical Jewish thought has a rich tradition of practical and challenging teachings and laws about these questions. In this class, we will delve into them, as well as exploring the light that the thought of the French-Jewish philosopher Emanuel Levinas can shed on the topic.

This seminar is part of the 2026-2027 Radical Readings series focusing on major Jewish holidays, led by Matthew Gindin. Radical Readings invites participants to reflect on the timelessly radical implications of classical Jewish texts through based study and discussion. The accessible format sparks thoughtful engagement for both newcomers and long-time students of Jewish traditions.

Registration is required in advance, with up to 25 spots available. The Radical Readings series is open to everyone on a sliding scale. Students from diverse cultures, beliefs, and identities are enthusiastically welcomed. No one will be turned away for lack of funds (contact admin@peretz-centre.org).

You can join the next two seminars related to Simkhas Torah on October 1st (the Torah) and October 8th (the Talmud).
