Event Description
My parents, Samuel L. Shneiderman (1906-1996) and Eileen Shneiderman (1908-2004, nee Halina Szymin), lived a turbulent, but productive life across important events of the 20th century. Their journalistic partnership brought them from Warsaw to Paris and Spain in the 1930s, then to New York City in 1940, where they were at the center of the Yiddish writers community. They also published stories on the Holocaust, Poland, Russia, Israel, and contemporary personalities in leading English publications. In their later years, my parents followed my sister Helen Sarid to live in Israel.
Their English and Yiddish work is currently receiving attention and fresh translations, such as the English translation of the 1938 Yiddish book Journey into the Spanish Civil War (to be published in June by the Yiddish Book Center’s White Goat Press). They are featured in a new website, A Vital Partnership, of the U.S. National Museum of American Jewish History.
