The Peretz Centre proudly announces

¡Festival Judío!

The First-ever

Festival of Latin American Jewish Culture
October 29–31, 2004

There has been a Jewish presence in Latin America for over 500 years and its development and contribution to the history of the region is a story not yet told. Everyone is invited to enjoy this glimpse into a rich but little-known culture that, thanks to recent immigration, now thrives in our midst.

¡Festival Judío! will include film, lectures, dance, art and music by Jewish people from Argentina, Chile, and Mexico.

Friday October 29, 8:00 pm: Peña (cabaret-style party) featuring local entertainers from all over Latin America. Admission: $5.00. Beer, wine and empanadas available for purchase.

Saturday October 30, 11:00–noon (families), 2:00–3:00 (adults): Argentina-born writer-artist Silvana Goldemberg will lead a workshop for families, Play with Words/Juego con Palabras, in English and Spanish. Admission: Free.

Saturday October 30, 3:30–4:30: Silvana Goldemberg will read from works by Jewish Latin American writers. In Spanish. Admission: Free.

Admission: $15/students and seniors, $18/adults. Maestra Herner is appearing with the permission of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes.

Sunday October 31, 11:00 am: Lecture, The Jewish Communities of Latin America, by Dr. Bernardo Berdichewsky, world renowned authority on Latin American Jewish culture. Admission: $6.00, includes light lunch.

Sunday October 31, 1:30 pm: Screening of Novia que te vea ("Bride to be" – Spanish with English subtitles) by Jewish-Mexican filmmaker Guita Schyfter, 1993. This witty comedy is the first Mexican film to explore the life of the Jewish community within the ethnic complexity of modern urban Mexico. Admission: $8 students and seniors, $10 adults. Couresy of Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía.

Art work by Nora Patrich, Miriam Aroeste and others will be on display throughout the Festival.
