Judío!
The
First-ever
Festival
of Latin American Jewish Culture
October 29–31, 2004
There
has been a Jewish presence in Latin America for over 500 years and its
development and contribution to the history of the region is a story
not yet told. Everyone is invited to enjoy this glimpse into a rich
but little-known culture that, thanks to recent immigration, now thrives
in our midst.
¡Festival
Judío! will include film, lectures, dance, art
and music by Jewish people from Argentina, Chile, and Mexico.
Friday October 29, 8:00 pm: Peña (cabaret-style
party) featuring local entertainers from all over Latin America. Admission:
$5.00. Beer, wine and empanadas available for purchase.
Saturday October 30, 11:00–noon (families), 2:00–3:00
(adults): Argentina-born writer-artist Silvana Goldemberg will
lead a workshop for families, Play with Words/Juego con Palabras, in
English and Spanish. Admission: Free.
Saturday October 30, 3:30–4:30: Silvana Goldemberg
will read from works by Jewish Latin American writers. In Spanish. Admission:
Free.
Saturday October 30, 8:00 pm: Direct from Mexico, Jewish-Mexican
soprano Susana Herner in a concert of works ranging from Bernstein to
Weill to Mexican folk music; accompanied by Karen Shumka. Admission:
$15/students and seniors, $18/adults. Maestra Herner is appearing
with the permission of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes.
Sunday October 31, 11:00 am: Lecture, The Jewish
Communities of Latin America, by Dr. Bernardo Berdichewsky, world
renowned authority on Latin American Jewish culture. Admission: $6.00,
includes light lunch.
Sunday October 31, 1:30 pm: Screening of Novia
que te vea ("Bride to be" – Spanish with English
subtitles) by Jewish-Mexican filmmaker Guita Schyfter, 1993. This witty
comedy is the first Mexican film to explore the life of the Jewish community
within the ethnic complexity of modern urban Mexico. Admission: $8 students
and seniors, $10 adults. Couresy of Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía.
Art work by Nora Patrich, Miriam Aroeste and others will be on display
throughout the Festival.
